Decathlon winner and television personality William Bruce Jenner, normally known simply as Bruce Jenner, was born on October 28, 1949 in Mount Kisco, New York. He is the step-brother of Gary Busey, whose family his mother married into when Jenner was still in high school. The two men remain on good terms and consider each other brothers.
Jenner is known primarily for his role in the 1970’s Olympics when, after years of training, he managed to take third in the 1972 decathlon trials. He would take tenth place in the resulting 1972 Munich decathlon, and then in 1976 Jenner would go on to win the entire thing, taking the gold while managing to set a world record of 8,634 points.
Jenner also set a memorable standard for winning athletes thereafter by taking an American flag from a bystander and running a victory lap with the flag in hand. Other athletes have done similar things ever since.
Jenner managed to receive a James E. Sullivan Award and the Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year in 1976 for his performance. He has since been inducted into the Olympic Hall of Fame, the Bay Area Hall of Fame and the Connecticut Sports Hall of Fame, as well.
Since then Jenner is best known for his television appearances. His first was on The American Sportsman with Grits Gresham, a show that featured Gresham traveling to far-flung locales with celebrities to fish and hunt. He also appeared in bit parts on several television shows, including Silver Spoons and CHiPS, and in the flop disco movie Can’t Stop the Music.
Jenner made his big television starting in 2002, however, when he began appearing in a string of game shows and reality television programs, starting with an episode of The Weakest Link. Soon after he was cast in the reality television series I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!, where he managed to do decently but lost out to Cris Judd, Melissa Rivers and John Melendez. Again not long after he made an appearance on an episode of Donald Trump’s The Apprentice.
In 2006 Jenner returned to his physical roots (albeit in a different fashion than the decathlon) when he appeared on Skating with Celebrities with figure skater Tai Babilonia. The pair did well but were eliminated from the competition on the fifth of seven shows.
Jenner appeared in 2007 and 2008 on the realty show Keeping Up with the Kardashians, a show that has seen a surge of popularity and has since been renewed for a third season. Jenner appeared alongside his wife, stepdaughters and daughters on the show. Additionally his two sons Brandon and Brody have appeared on reality television shows of their own, with Brandon and Brody appearing on The Princes of Malibu and Brody also appearing onThe Hills.
